This is a functional thesis, which was implemented in collaboration with an elementary school based in Helsinki. The purpose of the thesis was to improve the girls’ social skills and self-esteem. The main goals for the thesis were to improve the girls’ self-esteem, social skills and help the girls befriend each other. Another goal of the thesis was to produce material for professionals in the field, who are dealing with similar issues with girls aged 11-13. The first step into the thesis was to interview the participants. The goal of the interviews before the group activity was to outline the needs of the individuals separately and also to get a coherent picture of the group and what its needs were. The interviews were semi-structured, with questions that were planned ahead. After the focused interviews, there were five group sessions, which were themed as follows: friendships, self-esteem and social media. The sessions consisted of conversations and functional exercises, for example drama practices. The participants rehearsed apologizing and forgiving, how to handle conflicts and how to develop self-compassion. The contents of the group activities were based on theory and different research sources on school bullying between girls, self-esteem and the effects of using social media. Gender sensitivity was the main point of view of the thesis. Given the fact that all the participants were female, and girls’ interaction with one another differs from how boys communicate, it was vital to aim the focus on girls only. The material developed through the project is suitable for use with girl groups within the age range of 11-13 especially. The feedback on the group activity was positive. Comparing the interviews held before and after the group activities, it could be seen that the girls’ comprehension of friendship had evolved during the participation in the group and the girls had also learnt media-criticality....
